Although he was 25 years my senior,I was able to stay up with him on many subjects,as I had grown up in the Houston Heights and my character was formed by many vets returning from WWII,my dad included.
Mr Reynolds paid me a huge compliment one day by noting the fact that i was the only "young" man that ever indentified the two firearms hanging in his den.
My two youngest children,Amy and Tyler were studying WWII at that time and I asked Mr.Reynolds if they could come and receive a fast history lesson about what he witnessed at Iwo Jima, his reply was, absolutley!! The three of us spent the better part of an afternoon with Joe,and the iumps in our throats and the wetness of our eyes were obivious,he managed to keep a tirteen and fifteen year old spellbound, and they remember to this day.
The last time I saw and spoke with my friend was in August-September of 2009,he had called and said,"my friend,I wonder if you might have time to drop by and see me",it was my turn to say absolutley.I didnt stay very long this time as Joe seemed to be very tired,as I rose to leave he asked if it would be alright if he didnt walk me to the door this time? I replied no thats fine I can lean over and get my hug right here, and we shared a laugh. We hugged and the last words he spoke to me were,"God bless you my friend,I love you, come back and see me",to which I replied,"I will,I'll be back soon,I love you to".
I have learned through the years that with the passing of such great men as Joe Reynolds, there is no such thing as replacing them, one must lean to exsist without them.
Charles SatterfieldAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
